Treated Lumber

Pressure treated lumber is wood that has been placed in a depressurized  tank that removes excess air and replaces it with a combination of  preservative agents and water.  This process helps to avoid rotting from moisture and insects but does not prevent weathering and corrosion.  Wood is the traditional material used for building decks and continues to be utilized for its many values.  Wood has a more classic look and feel than other materials, can come with a lesser upfront cost and is a renewable resource.  However, keeping your wood deck in tip-top shape does require yearly maintenance.

To protect your deck against common, naturally occurring problems like warping, splitting, fading and mildew growth, we suggest cleaning it once a year with a product that contains a mildewcide and then applying a water repellent with an ultraviolet stabilizer for surface protection.  Depending on the amount of sunlight exposure, moisture and tree or shrub coverage, you may be able to perform routine maintenance every 18 to 24 months but waiting any longer can decrease the life of your deck.

Composite Decking

Composite deck boards are made from cores comprised of either 100% polymer material or a blend of organic wood flakes and plastics. Composite deck boards can be partially or fully encapsulated — meaning a 3- or 4-sided cap. Unlike traditional wood, most composite deck boards feature a structural layer of protection: the outer capping.  Although composite decks usually come with a higher upfront cost, the maintenance required is much less and the durability and lifetime expectancy is longer than a traditional wood deck.  Composite material holds up better to the elements in most conditions compared to wood decks, but some routine maintenance is still required to keep your composite deck in tip -top shape.  Composite material is usually cooler than wood during the summer months, but keep in mind that the darker the color you choose, the hotter it will be.  To protect your composite deck against common, naturally occurring problems, we suggest cleaning it yearly with a composite deck cleaner.

Choosing the right material for your decking project is a big decision and we would be happy to speak with you about any further questions you may have.
